Born at the close of the nineteenth century, Stanley Wilson has led a stormy petrel existence doing battle with the Establishment. Only when the well-being of others calls for compromise is he prepared to concede his convictions. Known to thousands of people in Essex, the author broadened his sphere of social activity considerably when 25 years ago he married Kitty, a former matron of Dr. Barnardo's homes. Together they have built up their own children's home whilst still taking a vigorous part in the political and community life of Saffron Walden. County Alderman, Magistrate, Churchwarden, Borough Councilor and twice Mayor of Saffron Walden, Stanley Wilson throughout his life has missed no opportunity to mingle with the men and women of the neighborhood. His love of ordinary work-a-day folk, coupled to a vivid memory, has enabled him to write a history book which brings to life the struggle for existence of the local community, their joys, sorrows, pleasures and abject poverty. The final chapter, written by his wife Kitty, shows that of all those whose names will be remembered in the town, that of the author is not the least illustrious. His autobiography, The Mayor and the Matron, published in 1971, has been sold in most countries in the world. It tells the story of two dedicated but eccentric people who love people but especially children. Saffron Crocus, written in the same lively and sometimes earthy vein, is a tribute to scores of local men and women whose only claim to fame was their determination to go on living in the face of tremendous odds. Every line of workman-like prose echoes the man who from humble circumstances grew up a rugged individualist and champion of the under-dog.
